Educational Opportunities

At Working Girls Meadows we have the utmost respect for honeybees and an ever-growing understanding of their needs. We promote the science of beekeeping and share this with new and fellow beekeepers as they face the many challenges of sustainable beekeeping. A variety of educational opportunities are offered through hands-on classes, as well as through consulting and mentoring.

Beginner Beekeeping

This apiculture course includes hands-on training on a number of important topics related to beekeeping, including assembling hives and opening and examining colonies. From disease and mite prevention and hive management to honey production, this class will cover everything you need to know to further your hobby or get your business off the ground!

Review of Basic Beekeeping

Already started beekeeping or had a class? The objective of this couse is as a refresher or review of the world of the honeybee and techniques used in aqiculture today.  Topics reviewed include:  Bee Biology, Pest ans Disease and Mite Prevention, Getting bees, Setting up your hive, Management for one year and beyond.

Beyond the Basics:  Practical Hive Management Tools for Beekeepers

This hands-on program is designed as the next step for apiarists who have knowledge of the industry and have kept a colony for a minimum of (1) one full year.

The class will combine classroom lecture and bee yard visits throughout each day for hands-on practical application of key course concepts. The goal is to provide you with the necessary strategies to successfully grow and maintain your hives.

Course Topics include:

  • Mite Control

  • Overwintering

  • Queen Rearing

  • Splits and Nucs

  • Spring/Summer Management

  • Swarm Control

Queen Rearing

 Topics covered include queen and drone biology, timing of queen rearing in northern climates, stock selection and breeding for hygienic behavior, setting up mating yards, and record keeping.   Everyone will have a chance to try their hand at grafting larvae and raising their own queens. Learn to set up grafting colonies, starters and finishers as well as setting up mating nucs. Try your hand with different  queen rearing equipment designs that will allow you to start your own!
